The Cloud is a contemporary teahouse located on the highest hill of the Lu Yu Tea Cultural Campus in Huzhou, China. Set amidst the tea fields and natural landscape, the design draws inspiration from traditional teahouses but uses modern materials and innovative concepts to create a unique tea experience. The structure is intentionally designed to blur the boundaries between architecture and environment, emphasizing a sense of connection with nature and fostering a special atmosphere for visitors.
The architect, Jung Donghyun, developed a strategy that minimizes the physical presence of the building within the landscape. The teahouse appears almost as a temporary, ethereal world, created through a system of 170 steel poles spread across the terrain, supporting a fog installation called *The Present World*. The poles form a cloud-like outline, with the fog and spray system mediating the experience of floating, scattering, and disappearing—symbolizing cycles of nature, time, and spiritual renewal.
The teahouse levitates above the hillside, supported by slender steel columns, offering clear views of the sky and surrounding scenery. Its transparent glass walls further dissolve boundaries, immersing visitors in a misty, dreamlike environment where traditional cultural elements meet modern architecture. Overall, the Cloud Tea Room offers not just a space for tea but an immersive experience that connects geology, ecology, spirituality, and contemporary design.
