The Quartet – Songzhuang Z Museum

This project exemplifies a bold approach to integrating a contemporary aesthetic within a historic rural context. The building, prominently located in the center of Songzhuang Village, was a long-unused 1990s brick-and-concrete structure. Rather than disguising its stark contrast with traditional rammed-earth houses, the design embraces this disparity by transforming the building into a memorable landmark. The architecture was carefully deconstructed into four vertical volumes, interconnected through internal courtyards and surrounded by staggered rooftop terraces, creating a dynamic and rhythmic “quartet” of forms that resonate with both modern and traditional sensibilities.

To evoke the delicate artistry of traditional weaving, the façade was clad with a fine lattice of aluminum square tubes, painted in red and white, which wrap the entire building as if guided by a loom’s shuttle. The irregular spacing and varying density of the lattice pattern introduce a multidimensional “woven” effect, which shifts subtly with the changing natural light, giving the building a living, shimmering surface. This “color-shifting skin” not only enhances visual intrigue but also visually balances the building’s bold presence with an elegant sense of lightness and transparency.

Internally, the architects prioritized clarity of circulation and a seamless connection with the landscape, minimizing decorative interventions. A central “light well”—a vertical atrium—cuts through all three floors, bringing natural light into deep interior spaces and fostering visual connectivity across levels. External modifications, such as reconfigured windows and large openings, establish dialogue with the external environment, integrating the museum into the village landscape. The rooftop terrace offers an unobstructed panoramic view of the rustic surroundings, while custom “LOOM” furniture, inspired by traditional weaving apparatus, further reflects the theme.
