Veldstation Groot Saeftinghe
Netherlands, Land van Saeftinghe
The Veldstation is a unique building dedicated to nature research and conservation, located at the edge of Het Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe and the former Hedwigepolder. Designed to foster both human interaction and ecological growth, the building offers shelter and nesting sites for various species, from bees to owls, in this open and often harsh landscape.
Positioned on the gas plateau with its base in the Western Scheldt, the Veldstation supports ongoing 24-hour research during springtime, while also providing facilities for visiting groups, emphasizing both scientific inquiry and environmental education.
The structure’s design reflects a deep commitment to sustainability and harmony with nature. Its simple shape places a core space for human activities, while the surrounding shell and spaces between are tailored as habitats for fauna. Made predominantly from second-hand and organic materials—such as recycled wood, straw, flax, and natural clay shells—the building minimizes environmental impact. Its facade features materials like sand, shells, and stones that enrich habitats for insects and birds, with the roof serving as a safe nesting ground for waders and gulls. This innovative combination of ecological purpose and sustainable construction makes the Veldstation a true sanctuary for both people and nature.
