The Corridor
China, Huangshan
completed
in 2023
Situated in Fengwu Village, Biyang Town, Yixian County, Huangshan City, this project addresses the challenges facing one of southern Anhui's most picturesque yet under-preserved villages. Despite its scenic rural setting, Fengwu Village struggles with issues such as population decline, aging demographics, inadequate public facilities, and a lack of cultural activities. In response, the rural revitalization charity project "Fengwu JI" was initiated in 2023, focusing on local characteristics and utilizing space as a medium to enhance the residents' quality of life and community vitality.

A key component of this initiative is the "Huizhou Corridor," located in an irregularly shaped old lane at the village's core, approximately 16 meters long. This lane serves as an important thoroughfare in the villagers' daily lives and is lined with well-preserved buildings dating back to the Qing Dynasty, which reflect the area's rich history.

The narrow alley functions as the village's "outdoor living room," facilitating labor, leisure, and communal activities. At one end, the Jixiang Ting (Lucky Pavilion) serves as a gathering spot for the elderly, providing a pleasant space during the summer months. This alley, with its inherent socialization potential, became the focus for revitalization.

Interviews with villagers revealed memories of once-existing covered alleys that sheltered residents during rain, enhancing their daily experiences. These historical references informed the design of the "Huizhou Corridor," which aims to reconnect the past with contemporary living needs and technological advancements.

The design approach prioritizes the preservation of old buildings, featuring a structural system of prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT). This new material provides lightweight strength and environmental benefits while allowing for air circulation within the alley. Gentle touches minimize disturbance to the existing environment, with small-section wooden trusses adapting to the alley's varying width. This construction method facilitates on-site assembly without the need for large machinery.

Transparent corrugated polyester sheets form the roof, allowing natural light to filter through and creating a dialogue with the old walls, which refract light and texture. The design also incorporates landscaped seating areas within the alley, transforming it into a vibrant multifunctional public space. The renewed corridor not only accommodates daily passage but also fosters agricultural activities, social interactions, and children's play.

"Huizhou Corridor" exemplifies a micro-renovation approach, inserting a contemporary covered alley into the existing village landscape. This project enriches public life choices for villagers, allowing new memories to form while preserving the essence of their cultural heritage.
