This project is a thoughtful reinterpretation of layered urban fabric, integrating two buildings from different moments in history: a 1949 hanok (W2) and a 1968 reinforced concrete commercial building (W1). Rather than merely repairing or replacing, the design seeks harmony amid contrasts - materials, functions, and historical layers - by creating a layered new order that respects the layered temporality of the site.

A central feature is the "alley-like stairwell", inserted at the intersection of the boulevard and backstreet. Acting as a transitional gap, this stairwell links the two structures and the surrounding cityscape. It acts not only as a physical connector but also as a symbolic bridge, echoing traditional alleys that animated the old city, fostering movement, flow, and continuity.

The W1 façade offers one of the project's most iconic visual elements: a reinterpretation of traditional hanok roof rhythms expressed through modular metal panels. This contemporary facade subtly evokes historical memory while responding practically through prefab assembly that minimizes disruption to existing tenants, seamlessly blending old and new within the urban fabric.

Meanwhile, the W2 hanok interior retains its original wooden structure, enhanced by carefully designed gaps that allow natural light to deepen spatial qualities. These voids, especially within layered roof structures, serve as spatial thresholds that let the city’s rhythms and passage of time permeate the space, creating a fluid, living atmosphere.

Ultimately, this project exemplifies a superposition of times - an architecture that does not erase history but layers new interpretations onto it. It demonstrates how the past can be re-tuned to resonate with contemporary sensibilities, fostering a richer, more nuanced dialogue between memory and modernity. The architecture becomes a vessel where multiple temporal layers coexist, offering a complex engagement with the layered history of the city.
