House K

House K is located in an old, historically rich residential area distinguished by two-story houses with gabled roofs, set back from the street. Over the years, the neighborhood has transformed, with houses painted various colors, fences rebuilt, and windows replaced, resulting in a vibrant and eclectic landscape. The homeowners decided to rebuild their family residence to better suit their changing needs and family structure. The new design prioritizes participation in the process of creating and adapting space over achieving a fixed architectural form, fostering a sense of organic growth that blends seamlessly into its surrounding environment.

The structural core of House K is a simple reinforced concrete grid that forms the three-story framework, which was then extended outward and filled with brick walls. Each element - windows, skylights, stairs, curtains, bathrooms - was carefully positioned, with subtle deviations from the original grid to produce a space of fragmented coexistence-autonomous yet interconnected. The house's spatial organization assigns different functions to each floor: the mother’s room, a shared living and dining area, and the son’s room. Projecting beams create semi-outdoor zones - approach areas, corridors, and balconies - that link floors and connect the interior with the city, daylight, and outdoor air, offering potential space for future modifications.

This construction method, common in the surrounding area, involves exposing and modifying the brick and concrete framework that many neighboring buildings conceal behind decorative facades. This approach reveals the building’s origins, making visible the structural system that supports the house. Through an ongoing process of adaptation and iteration, House K embodies the act of living itself - an evolutionary project where new possibilities are continuously integrated into its form, reflecting a dynamic relationship between the inhabitants and their environment.
