House of Horns
United States, California
completed
in 2024

The House of Horns is situated in the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains, offering a stunning view of San Francisco Bay. Its design ingeniously incorporates the ruins of a partially constructed ‘Spanish Style’ home, blending these remnants with new architectural principles to create a harmonious structure. Inspired by the concept of horns as musical instruments, the house is envisioned as an assemblage that captures the rhythms of the day and the changing seasons, reflecting the dynamic light and landscape of the surrounding environment.

The architectural layout features two distinct environments. The upper level, a single-story house, is designed as a spacious gathering area for cooking, dining, and socializing. Its unique ceiling, composed of inverted elliptical vaults, extends toward the edges of the room, illuminated by a series of skylights that introduce varying light perspectives. At the heart of this space lies a striking stone fireplace made from Danby marble, serving as a focal point and dividing the open area. Below, the house transitions into cave-like chambers, including a bathing space supported by an elegant stone column, all integrated with sunken courtyards that offer views of the natural landscape. Outside, the hillside is restored with California native vegetation, creating a cohesive relationship between the house and its surroundings, enriching the overall experience of the site.
