This project represents the inaugural Second Home location outside London, nestled within the historic “L” shaped wing of the Lisboa Mercado da Ribeira, a cherished landmark established in 1882. The vision behind this architectural transformation centers on preserving the essence and main features of the existing space while adapting it to serve as a contemporary workspace. The distinctive character of the building is defined by its expansive open areas framed by column-shaped iron windows and beautiful iron-cast trusses, which have been thoughtfully retained to create an inviting environment for collaboration.
At the heart of this design is a vast, 70x10 meter table, divided into three sections, allowing small companies to share a unified workspace. This table not only fosters interaction and communication among users but also accommodates individual needs through curved cut-outs that provide private areas for focused work. This innovative approach encourages a sense of community while ensuring each member has their own personal space to concentrate.
The spatial layout cleverly divides the area into two distinct environments within the "L" shaped plan. The primary working area, featuring the expansive table, is placed in the longer section, while the café lounge occupies the shorter part, crafted specifically for relaxation and social engagement. Each zone boasts its own unique ambience, seamlessly balancing productivity with leisure and providing a sanctuary for both focused work and informal gatherings.
A significant focus of this project was to minimize energy consumption and enhance sustainability. Collaborating with renowned climate engineer Adam Ritchie, the design team successfully eliminated the need for air conditioning by implementing a radiant floor system for heating and cooling, complemented by natural ventilation strategies. This environmentally conscious approach is further exemplified by the integration of 1,000 plants atop the large table, enhancing air quality and privacy within the space. These vibrant green elements serve as a captivating focal point, inviting users into a lively and inspiring "greenhouse" environment, dedicated to fostering community and creativity among all who enter.
