AUM cabins
Kazakhstan, Almaty
completed
in 2025
Perched at an altitude of 1,650 meters just outside Ile Alatau National Park, these two guest cabins are strategically located on the northern slopes of the Trans-Ili Alatau range, about 25 km south of Almaty. Designed for the family of the clients to host friends and showcase the breathtaking highland landscapes of the Kazakh Tien Shan, the project aims to blend comfort with a deep respect for nature. The core idea was to create a warm, welcoming retreat that preserves the environment while offering an authentic high-altitude experience away from the modern hustle.

The architecture draws inspiration from the ancient nomadic traditions of Central Asia, emphasizing harmony with the natural surroundings. The façades are clad with reclaimed larchwood sourced from old, dilapidated houses in the Altai Mountains, believed to be connected to the legendary Shambhala. Collected over two summers by the architect and client, these weathered planks carry traces of moss, mold, and history, giving new life to heritage materials while cleaning the sacred lands. The cabins are constructed using timber-framed SIP panels on metal piles, ensuring light, sustainable, and reversible construction that can be easily dismantled and recycled.

Inside, the interiors blend traditional nomadic elements with modern functionality. One cabin features two bedrooms with floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows facing east, while the other includes a kitchenette, a living room with a library, and a stunning mountain-view bathroom facing west. The central gathering space revolves around a wood-burning stove, surrounded by handmade tiles and felt carpets crafted by local artisans. The interiors are designed to be flexible, minimalist, and eco-friendly, allowing owners and guests to personalize their space freely, enhancing the authentic yet comfortable Highland experience.

These cabins exemplify a sustainable approach to mountain tourism - integrating local materials, traditional craftsmanship, and eco-conscious building techniques. They offer an immersive experience that reconnects visitors with the majestic landscape of Kazakhstan’s Tien Shan, encouraging a mindful appreciation of nature and cultural heritage while providing modern comforts in a pristine environment.
