Moses Bridge

The West Brabant Water Line is a historic defensive system situated in the southwest Netherlands, comprising a series of fortresses, cities, and inundation zones. Built in the 17th century, this defensive line was crucial for the country's borders but fell into disrepair by the 19th century. Recently, efforts have been made to restore part of this historical site, transforming Fort de Roovere into a recreational area with cycling and hiking routes.

A key feature of this restoration was the construction of a discreet access bridge over the fortress's moat. To maintain the site's historic and strategic integrity, designers created an innovative, invisible bridge that blends perfectly with the landscape. Made entirely of wood and waterproofed with EPDM foil, the bridge looks like a trench when viewed from a distance, hidden by the terrain and water. Only when visitors approach does the fortress reveal itself through a narrow opening, inviting them to walk through like Moses parting the waters—combining history, landscape, and modern design in a seamless manner.
