Restaurant y Sea is the final addition to Vector Architects' seashore series at the Aranya Community in Beidaihe, China, which also includes the Seashore Library and Seashore Chapel. Situated directly behind the library and overlooking the beach, the restaurant offers a relaxed atmosphere, contrasting with the focused environment of the library where visitors come to read and enjoy the sea view from the terrace.
The design of the restaurant incorporates trees that weave through the fragmented spatial boundaries and courtyards. Their branches sway in the sea breeze, casting playful shadows through skylights onto the walls and floors, creating a dynamic interplay of light and nature.
The courtyards serve both to separate and connect the surrounding spaces. The full-height, fair-faced cast-in-place concrete walls provide substantial support for the structure. They are engineered to bear the weight of thick eaves, supported by slender columns that are only 120mm in diameter, resembling the nearby tree trunks.
Alternative entrances to the restaurant feature clear glass sliding doors along the perimeter, allowing visitors to approach the dining area from various directions. When opened, these doors eliminate the boundaries of the space, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor.
According to Vector Architects, the dining room is bathed in immersive natural light. The design intentionally controls the overhead eaves' height to minimize excessive side light, crafting an atmosphere reminiscent of being beneath a floating "cloud," thanks to the light-filtering waffle beams.
In architecture, light, wind, and views provide pathways for people to connect with nature. This integration fosters a profound connection between individuals and their surroundings, imbuing the restaurant's everyday space with a sense of spiritual significance.
