VOIDS

At its core, VOIDS is a provocative inquiry into the interplay of absence and presence, material and immaterial, gesture and permanence. This innovative series, crafted by Objects of Common Interest, challenges traditional notions of form-making by emphasizing negative space—the unseen, the overlooked, and the transient aspects of existence. Through a meticulous process of casting, VOIDS metamorphoses ephemeral moments into tangible sculptures, elevating what is often disregarded into something enduring.

The initial series draws inspiration from the urban landscape of Athens, particularly corrugated steel shopfront rollers that bear the marks of time, graffiti, and functionality. Each iteration reinterprets these everyday surfaces through the act of casting, rendering them unusable while simultaneously celebrating the transient nature of their original state. This process not only highlights the transformation but also gives rise to new sculptural forms that capture the essence of transition, beckoning viewers to reflect on the impermanence of familiar structures.

Set against the backdrop of Villa Borsani at Alcova, VOIDS assumes a new dimension, bridging the worlds of public and private, architectural and intimate. The curator, Joy Herro, envisions the scenography as a living space where these sculptural works resonate beyond their physicality, infused with movement and autonomy. Presented for the first time at Frieze 2024, the collection seems to articulate a desire for transformation, as if the objects themselves yearn to break free from their static roles.

What makes VOIDS compelling is its engagement with the concept of transformation—not merely of materials, but of meaning, context, and time. These works embody an evolution, transitioning from urban remnants into autonomous sculptures, inviting contemplation of the spaces we navigate and the objects we choose to inhabit. Ultimately, VOIDS is more than an exhibition; it is an unfolding narrative, intertwining material, space, and memory, inviting us to reconsider the essence of form, function, and belonging. It compels us to reflect on what is created as well as what is left behind, underscoring the moments that shape our perceptions of space and materiality.
