2m26 and Onomiau collaborated to create a contemporary tea room known as Yachō, nestled in the northern mountains of Kyoto. Commissioned by Villa Kujoyama, a cultural satellite of the French Institute in Japan, the studios were tasked with designing a minimalist space that pays homage to the long-standing tradition of tea practice, particularly the principles established by the tea master Sen no Rikyū.

The design features a prominent, elongated chimney, which invites in shadows, silence, and warmth from the fire. This compact tea room is designed for individual use, adhering to traditional tatami dimensions while minimizing the space to a mere 95.5 x 64 cm (0.5 ken x 0.3 ken).

An upper lantern, lit by candlelight, symbolizes the passage of time through the flickering flame, while a lower fire pit is used for boiling water, emphasizing the ritual of tea preparation. The building's exterior is clad in burnt cedar shingles, adding a layer of reference to the elemental nature of fire.

Overall, this small pavilion serves as a tribute to the profound emotions conveyed through unconventional architectural shapes, creating an intimate space for reflection and contemplation.
