This café is located within the SanYuanLi Food Market in Beijing, China. Serving the entire community, the market benefits from its proximity to the embassy district and its orientation towards the hotel-lined banks of the LiangMa River, creating a unique atmosphere that distinguishes it from ordinary markets.
Upon entry, one encounters a diverse array of stalls, a wide range of ingredients, and a rich cultural ambiance. The market reflects traditional living scenes in contemporary urban settings, radiating lively energy through the interplay of conflict and integration. Positioned at the northern entrance, the café has one side facing the street while the other acts as a retail focal point, capturing the attention of passersby. Despite its modest 25m² footprint, the café holds significant importance.
The design team aimed to create a dialogue on street, community revitalization, and urban connections while exploring innovative approaches to communal public life. They leveraged the café’s exceptional location by employing a dual-track design strategy, emphasizing both the "uniqueness" and "everyday sensibility" of the space.
Given the refined sensibilities of the SanYuanLi Market and the stand-and-sip, all-you-can-eat coffee experience from Grid Coffee, the café's ambiance is crucial. The entrance facade features a seemingly random design that highlights naturalistic and artistic elements. The concrete shape serves as a framing component, drawing attention to those enjoying their coffee.
A handcrafted copper door provides a striking contrast to the rough concrete, allowing the café to stand out without overwhelming the space. The façade includes a unique selling window with an innovative opening mechanism that adds a playful touch. When opened, it fosters interaction between selling and experience, while when closed, the hand-hammered copper plate resembles a piece of art within the vibrant atmosphere of the market.
