Nestled in the Nanchuan District of Chongqing, the Drifting Stones project emerges as a serene escape amidst breathtaking natural beauty. Surrounded by lush evergreen trees, towering cliffs, and gentle streams, this vacation retreat captures the essence of its mountainous setting. Comprising a stone staircase and a pavilion, the project invites visitors to explore its surroundings, ascend the stairs for stunning views, or relax in the pavilion while enjoying the soothing sound of flowing water.
Originally sparked by the serendipitous discovery of a remarkable rock during an unrelated site visit, the project draws inspiration from this striking granite boulder, distinguished by its flat top and dramatic presence. Positioned at the valley's heart, it evokes images of extraterrestrial artifacts and ancient civilizations. After extensive feasibility studies, the concept of creating a resting space around this stone evolved, leading to the project’s name - “The Drifting Stones.”
The design of Drifting Stones aims to create a contrasting experience with nature, encouraging deeper connections through immersive perspectives. Elements mimic natural textures, seamlessly blending the architecture into its environment, while materials like steel, glass, and mirrors add a supernatural quality. This dual approach fosters a dialogue between the extraordinary and the natural.
Central to the project are “The Stacks,” comprised of ten stone slabs representing strength and balance. Their careful placement along the mountainside creates a tactile pathway for visitors, enhancing their sensory engagement with the surrounding landscape. The gap between the cantilevered steps and the boulder forms an indoor reception area, encased in frameless glass, offering panoramic views while providing shelter.
Nearby, "The Hut," a hillside pavilion functioning as a restroom, is connected by cobblestone pathways. Its mirrored surfaces blend seamlessly with the foliage, while a massive boulder “floats” overhead, creating a surreal atmosphere. The design incorporates a skylight, merging functionality with nature’s beauty.
Adopting an artificial stone approach due to site constraints, the construction employed a steel framework overlaid with cement mixed with local stone powder. Artisans crafted stone-like textures into the façade, harmonizing the structure with the cliffs. The design juxtaposes raw and refined elements, such as raw stone handles on glass doors and stainless steel fixtures, enriching the dialogue between nature and modernity.
Through the interplay of heavy stone and light mirror, the Drifting Stones project embodies a balance between the natural and the man-made. Though modest in scale, it redefines its surroundings in a striking yet harmonious manner. As the sight of the massive boulder and the sound of the stream persist, visitors are invited to find fleeting moments of inner tranquility amidst the reflections of drifting clouds and tree shadows.
