Painters´ Apartment
Czech Republic, Praha
completed
in 2020

In the summer of 2019, a family of artistic professionals approached our studio to renovate a modest apartment located in a panel building on Červený vrch. The project aimed to transform the space into a functional, creative, and warm home suitable for a young family with a toddler, all within a limited budget.

This challenge was met with a flexible, improvisational approach - an architecture that celebrates relaxed, free spaces and personal expression. The design emphasizes a sense of life and personality, incorporating furniture and art pieces made by the clients and their friends, as well as secondhand lighting and DIY elements that add character and authenticity to the space.

The layout is centered around a simple yet dynamic use of materials and spatial connections. The entrance hall and kitchen form a continuous grid of tiles that spills onto the walls, creating a playful altar of cooking. The bathroom is illuminated with a striking pattern of turquoise glass blocks, adding a pop of color to the clean, minimal aesthetic. The refurbishment preserved and exposed original wooden floors, kept rough openings in the concrete walls, and exposed load-bearing walls and ceilings as raw, textured surfaces - accentuated by installed tin doors that serve as creative magnets. These design choices contrast the avant-garde corridor with the cozy living rooms, emphasizing a personalized, eclectic environment.

Functionally, the apartment remained largely unchanged in structure but was subtly adapted to improve spatial efficiency. The living area connects to a newly created children’s room, providing privacy and flexibility. Custom-made plywood furniture plays a crucial role in organizing the space: a multifunctional storage block in the hall, a full wall of cabinets in the main room, and a complete kitchen with a dining area. The result is a lively, unconventional home that balances artistic expression with practical comfort, making full use of the limited space through creative and personal interventions that truly reflect the clients’ artistic spirit.
