Big Red Crayfish

This project exemplifies a carefully conceived approach to integrating contemporary design with a historically rich context along the Qinhuai River in Nanjing. The renovation respects the integrity of the ancient structures while transforming the site into a vibrant gastronomic and commercial hub. Central to this effort are the streamlined steel staircases that traverse from the first to the fourth floors, seamlessly connecting various parts of the complex. Their sinuous forms, inspired by the protective dragon, weave through the architectural ensemble with a striking visual presence. Painted in traditional Chinese red, these staircases serve both as an iconic landmark and a visual narrative that emphasizes the theme of “Big Red Crayfish,” adding energy and cultural sentiment to the space.

The architectural aesthetic fuses modern materials—metal and glass—with classical silhouettes, which are simplified yet imbued with elements of “Cyber Chinese Style.” This blend layers ancient Chinese aesthetic sensibilities with contemporary sensations and futuristic dreams, creating a dynamic architectural language that deepens the space’s cultural connotations. The careful consideration of texture, form, and color results in an environment that balances tradition with innovation, enriching the visitor experience and expanding the spatial narrative.

During construction, a sustainable and respectful approach was prioritized. Original elements such as doors and Taihu stones were repurposed—doors transformed into glass screens, stones reorganized as functional barriers—ensuring minimal intervention on historic structures. All new additions, like the sculptural staircases, were designed to avoid damaging the original fabric of the heritage site, thereby promoting preservation and flexibility in adaptive reuse. This methodology underscores a commitment to maintaining the site’s historical integrity while enabling contemporary functionality, fostering a harmonious dialogue between past and present.
